Commonwealth Day replaced the former Empire Day and is celebrated across Commonwealth countries on the second Monday in March. In the UK, there is usually a service at Westminster Abbey which is attended by the Queen (as head of the Commonwealth) and other dignitaries. This year, virtual events are being held with a focus on women’s leadership as part of International Women’s Day today.
The theme for the day, ‘Delivering a Common Future’, highlights how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth are ‘innovating, connecting and transforming’ to help achieve some of its biggest goals, such as fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade.
