Meet the Mayor’s chosen charities – Flag DV and The Hummingbird Centre

Meet the Mayor’s chosen charities – Flag DV and The Hummingbird Centre

Last Updated on July 29, 2025

At FLAG DV, we provide free, confidential, and trauma-informed legal advice to victim-survivors of domestic abuse navigating family law issues. Our dedicated service is designed to empower clients with clear legal information, helping them feel supported and confident in taking their next steps.

About the Service

FLAG DV offers one-off legal advice appointments delivered by experienced solicitors. Our service is tailored to your specific situation, ensuring you get the advice that’s right for you.

We focus on:

  • Empowering you to understand your legal rights
  • Helping you make informed decisions about family law matters such as child arrangements, separation and divorce, and protective orders
  • Providing a bridge to other essential services that support your journey to safety and independence

How It Works

  1. Initial Coordination Call
A phone call with one of our service coordinators to understand your situation, discuss your goals for the legal appointment, and identify any additional support needs.
  2. Legal Advice Appointment
A 30-minute session with a solicitor who specialises in your specific legal concerns. You’ll receive impartial, practical guidance in a confidential setting.
  3. Flexible Appointment Options
Most sessions take place via telephone, but virtual or in-person appointments can be arranged where appropriate.

Our Core Objectives

  • Expand Access to Free Legal Advice
Ensuring that victim-survivors of domestic abuse can access expert, trauma-informed legal guidance when it matters most.
  • Empower Through Legal Knowledge
Helping victim-survivors understand their legal rights and navigate the family court system with clarity and confidence.
  • Promote Safety Through Legal Remedies
Providing advice on protective measures such as:
    • Non-molestation orders
    • Occupation orders
  • Ensure Inclusive, Safe Services
We deliver a confidential, respectful service that welcomes adults of all genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Translation and communication support are available.

Take the First Step
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse and needs legal advice relating to family law, FLAG DV is here to help. Find out more here.

Complementary Therapies

It’s hard to feel your true self when cancer is ruling your body. Take time out for a bit of pampering with an Indian head massage, reflexology, Bowen treatment, Reiki or sound therapy session.

Our complementary therapies are available for people with cancer and those caring for them. We want your mind to be in the best place to support the body through all the challenges you face.

Get in touch with one of our team to book an appointment.

Arts & Crafts

We have a varied timetable of arts and crafts sessions open to everyone. It’s a great way to focus on something different, have some fun and chat with people who understand what you’re going through.

Our sessions are run by talented artists, enthusiastic volunteers and sometimes our guests. Add art therapy and journaling to your cancer journey toolbox.

Counselling

Our counsellors are trained and experienced to help you cope with all stages of your cancer journey. We will chat through your needs and match you with the best counsellor.

We can offer twelve free sessions, then need to make a small charge for ongoing counselling. To find out more please do get in touch.

Lymphoedema Clinic

Lymphoedema is a common side effect of cancer treatment and can cause swelling and discomfort affecting general wellbeing. To access this service you will need a medical referral from either a GP or your cancer team.

Equine Therapy

The Hummingbird Centre is unique in the therapies we provide for our guests and Equine Therapy is all about working with horses. Don’t worry you don’t have to ride them!

We introduced Equine Therapy to the Centre five years ago, as we found that sometimes talking face to face with someone was not what was always needed. Horses/animals are non-judgmental, they take you for who you are and work with you in a completely different way, enabling you to work with your fears and emotions.

If you would like to know more, please contact The Hummingbird Centre.

Celebrant and Pastoral Support

Our volunteer Celebrants offer pastoral support at the Hummingbird Centre, holding talks and one-to-one sessions with guests.

Sue Clark, who provides pastoral support, says “One thing that is certain in this life is that we are going to pass to spirit. People who use The Hummingbird Centre are likely to think about their mortality and may want to prepare for the inevitable. I just want to help people to ensure nothing is left unsaid”.
