Bicester Town Council is urging people to nominate their local hero to receive a Good Citizen Award.
Every year the town council honours local people who have gone above and beyond to support the community in some way, and this year is no exception.
Residents can be nominated for a wide range of reasons, including outstanding achievement in their field such as sports or culture, contribution to commercial life, improving the local environment, improving other people’s lives, gained national or international recognition for Bicester, or an act of bravery.
Previous winners include Bicester Foodbank founder Janet Ray, Group Scout Leaders Jill Edwards and Ellie Thompson, Mechelle Harris in recognition of her dedicated service as founder of The Hummingbird Centre and several volunteers at the Assisted Reading for Children charity, ARCh.
The annual Good Citizen Awards, run by the town council, is open to anyone to nominate an individual and this year’s deadline for nominations is Friday, March 12.
Council leader Cllr Richard Mould said: “The last year has been an exceptionally difficult year, but we have seen many individuals and groups step-up to support people across the community in so many different ways.
“I’m sure that are a lot of people out there who deserve recognition and this award is a great way thank someone special who you feel has made a real impact on the town and its residents.
“Please do get nominating your local hero – we look forward to reading more about this year’s nominees, all of whom should be rightly proud of themselves.”
Last year’s Good Citizen Awards were put on hold due to the coronavirus, but award winners from 2019/2020 will be announced soon.
All winners for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 will be presented with a Good Citizen badge and certificate. The presentation usually takes place at the annual mayor making ceremony, but a decision on how the awards will be delivered this year will be made nearer the time depending on COVID-19 restrictions.
The Good Citizen Award scheme was launched in 2001 as a way of recognising people who had made a positive impact on their community and to thank them for their hard-work.
