A picnic in the park and outdoor remembrance service to mark Victory in Europe (VE) Day in May will no longer take place. And the Family Fun Day in association with Armed Forces Day, due to take place in June, has also been cancelled.
The move comes after the Government announced strict new measures across the UK to fight the spread of COVID-19.
Town council leader Richard Mould said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the planned VE Day celebrations and Armed Forces Day events will no longer take place. This has been a difficult decision, and we know it will be very disappointing to many people, but residents’ safety must come first.
“No decision has been taken on the other planned summer events. We will await further information from the government on the best way to proceed and will make decisions about future events based on the latest information. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank those residents who were due to be involved in these events for all their hard-work in planning and organising activities.
“To the wider community we thank you for your understanding at this very difficult time.”
